Embodying Rhythm: a Middle Eastern Drumming Workshop
Saturday, April 8 ~ 1:15 – 3:15 pm
Do you suffer from chiftetelli confusion? Can’t tell a beledi from a bedlah? Would you like to be able to talk to musicians with confidence or perform live for your favorite dancer? Then this is the workshop for you!
Brian has over 10 years experience playing and teaching middle eastern instruments both regionally and at such events as the Pennsic Wars and Darabukistani Days. During this workshop, Brian will help you to improve your understanding of middle eastern rhythms by making them fun and accessible. Basic techniques for middle eastern hand drumming will be covered, and you will have the opportunity to play a doumbek, a djembe, or a frame drum. By the end of the workshop, you will learn how to recognize a variety of rhythms and will have a deeper understanding of hand drumming technique and style.
This workshop is open to beginners as well as more experienced musicians. No previous drumming experience is required.
Participants in this workshop will be invited to join in the live music at World In Motion’s Spring Hafla on Saturday, May 20!
A few drums will be available to borrow, but we recommend that you bring your own if possible.
